Report on the cup first round match v. Fordham (home) 27.04.04

Milton won by 8 wickets
Fordham 77 for 5 in 18 overs    Milton  81 for 2 (11 overs)

Milton got off a good start in a very early season match, which had to be hastily re-located to King’s College School to avoid a clash with a soccer fixture at the Sycamores.
Fordham won the toss and batted.  The Milton bowling was rather wayward, and there were too many wides, although the pace troubled the batsmen too.  A fine run out after some sharp fielding by John Underwood and a typical piece of quick thinking by wicket-keeper, Michael Franklin to gain a stumping, reduced the visitors to 17 for 2, but the innings was well held together by N Foulds (38 not out) who added 28 with N Houghton, before the latter was caught and bowled by Adam Coles.  Captain Ryan Carey and Jim Reynolds also chipped in with a wicket apiece, although it was Carey and Coles who really applied the brakes.
Milton signalled their intent early on and the run rate never fell below one a ball.  Ciaran O’ Kane (21) began very briskly, before becoming the victim of the second successive sharp catch by their mid-wicket, before an excellent undefeated partnership of 36 between Michael Franklin (28 not out) and Ryan Carey (23 not out) saw Milton home.  The next round is against Burwell on Monday May 10th at home.

Report on the cup second round match v. Burwell (home) 10.05.04

Milton won by 79 runs
Milton  130 for 2 (20 overs)    Burwell  51 for 6  (20 overs)

Milton progressed into the quarter finals of the Under 15 cup with a comfortable victory over Burwell.  On the first warm, dry day for as long as anyone can remember the pitch played remarkably well although, inevitably, a little soft.
After the early dismissal of Tom Fenner a fine stand of 57 in 8 overs by James Henderson (51 not out, including six fours) and Ciaran O’Kane (18) swung the game Milton’s way.  Henderson was then joined by Michael Franklin (27 not out) and the pair added 66 at better than a run a ball. The visitors did not help their cause by bowling 30 wides and no balls and took until half past seven to complete their 20 overs.
When Milton fielded Rob Jervis struck with his first ball and Ryan Carey again in the next over.  Both wickets were courtesy of fine catches at the wicket by Michael Franklin, the latter a particularly agile effort; he later added a stumping.  Steady bowling by Nick Seaman, Simon Coston (with a sharp caught and bowled) and Jack Franklin soon reduced the Burwell innings to an impossible run chase and John Underwood (2 for 12) took two wickets in an over near the end, one a fine catch by O’Kane who had earlier missed a much easier chance.
The quarter-final will be home to either Wilbrahams or Newmarket.

Report on the league match v. Thurlow (home) 20.05.04

Milton won by 2 wickets
Thurlow 97 all out (18.1 overs)    Milton 99 for 2 (19.1 overs)

An exciting finish to start the league season for Milton.  Thurlow won the toss and batted.  Fine opening bowling by Rob Jervis (3 for 8) and Ryan Carey (1 for 8) reduced the visitors to 17 for 3.  Then a hard hitting innings by W Muller (32), who was twice dropped, picked up the pace, as the later Milton bowlers, apart from Simon Coston (2 for 18), could not match the accuracy of the openers. Muller shared a 5th wicket stand of 30 with L Lambdon, and, with J Barber hitting two successive fours to bring the score to 91 fro 6 in the 16th, a score over a hundred seemed likely.  Then Adam Coles and Tom Fenner, with two wickets apiece, brought the innings to a premature close.
Each of the Milton batsmen contributed a few at a steady rate.  After a solid 12 from Sam Allen, Rob Jervis (7) and Ryan Carey (10) accelerated, but it was fine innings by Adam Coles (21 including a 6 and 4 in the same over) which really gave Milton the advantage, despite steady bowling by L Lambdon (3 for 12).  Needing less than a run a ball, Ciaran O’Kane and James Henderson intlleligently pushed singles to the deep field, and an edge through the slips on the first ball of the 20th over, gave Milton a slightly fortunate victory in an entertaining match.
There are two matches next week :  v. NCI in League on Monday (away) and v. Wilbrahams in Cup on Tuesday (Home).

Report on the league match v. NCI (away) 24.05.04

Milton won by 57 runs
Milton 142 for 4 (20 overs)    NCI  85 for 7  (20 overs)

A fairly comfortable win for Milton.  The game at Churchill College started late with the heavy traffic causing chaos and the hosts also took a long time to bowl their overs with the result that their own innings did not start until after 8pm!  By then the game was virtually already beyond their reach, after a fine batting performance by Milton.
Ciaran O’Kane (16) and Ryan Carey began with an enterprising stand of 29 in 4 overs and then Michael Franklin (48 not out) held the rest of the innings together.  He shared in a good stand of 39 with Rob Jervis (18) and an even better one of 67 with the hard-hitting Nick Seaman (23), with Hallam Cutmore picking up 2 for 21 for NCI.
The NCI innings began badly with wickets in each of the first two overs, the first being one of two superb run outs by captain Tom Fenner, the other a fine clean bowled by Rob Jervis.  Soon after that NCI were 17 for 4 but Aidan Litterick (49) brought about a recovery aided by Hallam Cutmore in a stand of 61 before a flurry of late wickets fell, including two in the last over by James Henderson (2 for 5).

Report on the cup quarter-final match v. Wilbrahams (home) 25.05.04

Wilbrahams won by 10 wickets
Milton 119 for 5 (20 overs)      Wilbrahams  120 for 0  (12.2 overs)

Milton’s run of victories came to an end in emphatic fashion when the Wilbrahams opening pair of D Towriss (50 not out) and A Durrant (53 not out, including three sixes), disdaining the run a ball target, the very bad light and the drizzle and a broken (new) bat, literally smashed their way to victory.  After four circumspect overs and 17 runs, 16 runs came in an over and every subsequent over yielded at least one boundary, the match finishing with a four and a six off the first two balls of the 13th over.
Earlier, a fine 41 from Nick Seaman (including seven fours) and a few each from the other four of the first five batsmen, along with 26 wides, seemed to have produced a reasonably competitive score.  Good figures from L Elmer (2 for 7 in 4 overs) helped to peg Milton back and the acceleration was never quite satisfactory, but it might have made little difference against this batting display.

Report on the league match v. Wilbrahams (home) 07.06.04

Milton won by 6 runs
Milton 152 for 5 (20 overs)      Wilbrahams  146 for 3 (20 overs)

A remarkable performance by a Milton side lacking 8 regular players and forced to call in four debutants form the under 13s, all of whom played their part well in the field.     The result presented an unexpected and baffling reversal of the crushing win by Wilbrahams in the Cup a fortnight earlier.
As in the first encounter Milton batted first.  A superb partnership of 83 by Ciaran O’Kane (46) and Ryan Carey (24) in 11 overs created a solid platform and there were good contributions from Adam Coles (15) and Sam Allen (20).  David Saville with 3 for 29 produced the best bowling for the visitors.
The Wilbrahams openers who had taken the Milton attack apart in the first match were both dismissed cheaply this time as a result of fine catches by James Henderson (on the boundary) and Ryan Carey who, as captain, positioned his field intelligently, bowled tidily and led the side enthusiastically.  The successful bowler in each case was under 13 Tom Linstead (2 for 28), while under11 Will Conlon also bowled four accurate overs for 22 to peg back the Wilbrahams reply as Liam Elmer (42) and Ryan Gawthrop (48 not out) threatened to keep up with the run rate.  Wilbrahams never gave up the chase but the target of 16 off the last over in fading light proved to be just out of reach.

Report on the league match v. Thurlow (away) 14.06.04

Thurlow won by 3 runs[/size]
Thurlow 129 for 3 (20 overs)      Milton 126 all out (19 overs)

Another excellent finish between these two well matched sides.  At 84 for 8 with 5 overs remaining Milton seemed out of it, but a fine effort by the later batsmen nearly redeemed the errors of the higher order.  Jack Franklin (16) and Rob Jervis (13) had already effected a partial recovery and then James Henderson (24) and Jim Reynolds (10 not out) each made stands with Simon Coston of 22 and 18 respectively before Coston was stumped when wondering out of his ground. Earlier in the innings a bright opening of 21 by Ciaran O’Kane (17) was wasted by a succession of wickets, reducing Milton to a seemingly hopeless 30 for 4.
An aggressive 54 not out by M Farrant was the backbone of the Thurlow innings and he was well supported by T Edwards with 21 not out.  Milton’s bowlers conceded a disappointing 23 wides, and there was a lethargy in the field which contributed to many singles being turned into twos, and which led to the 20 overs absurdly taking 90 minutes to bowl.  An outstanding bowling performance by Simon Coston (2 for 14) provided some compensation, but the home team’s total of 129 always looked difficult in the fading light.

Report on the league match v. Shelford & Stapleford (home) 22.06.04

Milton won by 2 wickets
Shelford 114 for 6 (20 overs)      Milton 115 for 8 (18.4 overs)

Milton made a remarkable escape from jail in a match where they seemed hopelessly placed at 57 for 8 (only half way to their target) in the 12th over.  But at that point, in fading light and irritating drizzle, the brilliant Ryan Carey (57 not out) took charge, ably supported by Rob Welton (11 not out) in an unbroken 9th wicket stand of 58 in 8 overs to give Milton an astonishing victory with 8 balls to spare.  Carey hit two gigantic sixes and 9 fours, surviving a skied chance just after completing his fifty.  Earlier Milton had lost two wickets in the first three balls before Simon Coston (13) brought about a slight recovery but when he was out, Nick Seaman was immediately unluckily bowled by a shooter and Ali James was also out to leave Milton at 31 for 6.
The Shelford innings also started shakily when Ryan Carey took wickets in each of his first two overs, and then a runout following a brilliant stop by Tom Fenner reduced the visitors to 30 for 3, which became 34 for 4 when Simon Coston took a wicket.  Then a fine stand by J Pugh and C Pounds (both 28) of 54 at better than a run a ball provided the basis for a competitive score of 114 for 6 which, for most of the Milton innings, looked more than enough.

Report on the league match v. Wilbrahams (away) 28.06.04

Milton won by 88 runs
Milton  142 for 2  (20 overs)   Wilbrahams  54 all out  (15 overs)

For the second successive match Milton captain Ryan Carey produced a brilliant innings that amounted to half the team score.  After Sam Allen (17) and Michael Franklin (28) had weathered a lively opening spell from M Fiddy and Liam Elmer with cricket of high quality from both bat and ball, Franklin joined Carey in a fine match-winning stand of 91 in 11 overs.  While Carey hit 7 boundaries and several twos that would have been boundaries on most pitches, Franklin supported ably with some well taken singles.  Nick Seaman (11 not out) helped Carey to add 22 at the end; although the run rate slowed somewhat a useful total had been posted.
Apart from the excellent T Stearn (32) the Wilbrahams batsmen (many of whom were inexperienced in a depleted side) failed to get into double figures, 4 being the second highest score.  A devastating spell from Robert Jervis (4 for 7 in 3 overs, all clean bowled) broke the back of the reply.  Combining fierce pace with some swing, and a full length, he was almost unplayable.  Debutant Freddie Steele (2 for 16), James Henderson (2 for 5) and Tom Fenner (1 for 3) completed the rout, and there were four catches (as well as a wicket) for the man of the moment, Ryan Carey.

Report on the league match v. Shelford and Stapleford (away) 05.07.04

Shelford won by 5 wickets
Milton 108 for 9 (20 overs) Shelford 110 for 5 (17.2 overs)

A well deserved win by Shelford, who gained revenge for the defeat from the jaws of victory at the hands of Milton a fortnight earlier. Milton won the toss, and batted on a pitch of variable bounce. After the early loss of Ciaran O’Kane, Nick Seaman and Ryan Carey made a brisk start but then both were dismissed, leaving Milton on 23 for 3. A good partnership by Adam Coles (11) and the excellent Simon Coston (35 not out), who held the innings together well, took the score to 61, but thereafter no-one could stay long with Coston, and the innings stuttered in the 90s as 93 for 5 became 98 for 9.
Early wickets for Carey and Seaman put Milton on top, but after a steady start, O Francis (49), with a belligerent knock, and J Pugh (25) put on 85 in 12 overs against some indifferent bowling and fielding. A couple of runouts caused a momentary panic but came too late to alter the course of the game, and the second of these was followed by an emphatic four by M Cage to seal Shelford’s victory.

Report on the league match v. NCI (home) 12.07.04

Milton won by 1 wicket

NCI  120 for 4  (20 overs)   Milton 123 for 9  (19.1 overs)

In a season of several close finishes this was the most dramatic and came, appropriately in the final competitive fixture.  Needing 4 to win off the final over the last wicket pair of Robert Jervis and Rob Welton were gifted two wides before Jervis swung high and straight to the long leg fielder on the boundary, who could not quite cling on. and spilled the ball over the boundary.
Earlier Milton seemed in desperate trouble at 23 for 4 following 3 wickets in an over by L Miller. But then man of the match Nick Seaman (40), with a powerful innings ably assisted by Simon Coston (11), put on 39 before Coston was bowled.  Adam Coles and James Henderson (7) continued to support Seaman in stands of 18 and 20 respectively but when Seaman played on Milton still needed 12 off the last two overs (a run a ball exactly as it had been at the outset).  Tom Fenner’s run out and James Henderson’s dismissal from a catch off a ball he could have left alone for a wide, then set up the last gasp finish.
A solid 48 from C Pike had been the backbone of NCI’s innings in which all the next three players also reached double figures.  There were also 29 wides; in a generally sub standard performance, Nick Seaman was an honourable exception with only 10 runs conceded from 4 tidy overs.

Report on the 2004 Season

The Milton Under 15 season produced an amazing series of close finishes with five of the eight league matches still in the balance as the last few balls began.  It was a tribute to the team’s ability to cope with the pressure that in four cases the match was decided in Milton’s favour while, in the defeat, the outcome was only decided in a harsh (if legally correct) way that bordered on the unsporting.  With an over to go in the away match at Thurlow, Milton had achieved the improbable feat of recovering from 84 for 8 with 5 overs remaining. Milton seemed out of it, but a fine effort by the later batsmen nearly redeemed the errors of the higher order.  Jack Franklin (16) and Rob Jervis (13) had already effected a partial recovery, and then James Henderson (24) and Jim Reynolds (10 not out) each made stands with Simon Coston of 22 and 18 respectively before Coston was stumped when wondering out of his ground.  He clearly thought the ball was dead, but the decision was out.  In the Thurlow home match a target of 98 was achieved with a snicked four on the first ball of the last over so, overall, perhaps, a win to each side was fair.

The first league match against Wilbrahams was remarkable. Lacking 8 regular players and forced to call in four debutants from the under 13s, all of whom played their part well in the field, Milton won by 6 runs after amassing a season’s best of 152.  A brilliant 46 by Ciaran O’Kane was the highlight.  The result presented an unexpected and baffling reversal of the crushing win by Wilbrahams in the Cup a fortnight earlier.  There was also a phenomenal innings by Ryan Carey of 57 not out (well supported by Robbie Welton) to give as an unlikely victory in the first Shelford match – the pair took us from 57 for 8 to the required target of 115 in 9 overs.  Carey also scored 71 not out the next week in the second and crushing win over a weakened Wilbrahams.  Shelford took their revenge with a 5 wicket win in the return when Milton’s performance was sub-standard throughout.
The final game against NCI produced the most astonishing finish of all.   Needing 4 to win off the final over the last wicket pair of Robert Jervis and Rob Welton were gifted two wides before Jervis swung high and straight to the long leg fielder on the boundary, who could not quite cling on and spilled the ball over the boundary to give Milton a one wicket run.

The Cup quarter final defeat by 10 wickets at the hands of Wilbrahams followed big wins in the earlier rounds against Fordham and Burwell, the latter of which featured 51 not out by James Henderson.
The batting was a little variable but showed a considerable depth, which stood us in good stead several times.  Sam Allen and Michael Franklin showed good technique and often helped to see off the better bowlers, Ryan Carey, James Henderson, Nick Seaman and Ciaran O’Kane could all hit the ball hard and all produced at least one score of 40 or more and there were useful contributions from Jack Franklin (who, with Michael and Sam Allen shared the wicket keeping duties), Jim Reynolds, Simon Coston (with two particularly valiant efforts in the league defeats), Adam Coles, Rob Jervis and Robbie Welton.
Fielding was often slipshod, a lack of agility and athleticism in the field being notable in comparison with most rivals, and a big factor in the defeats.  Failure to get behind the ball, lack of concentration in keeping position (allied to some poor field placing), lack of backing up and missed run out attempts abounded.  The same was true of calling and running between the wickets.  Carey took some very fine catches at short cover, and Michael Franklin was an alert wicket-keeper, with Jack Franklin deputising capably.

Rob Jervis was the leading wicket-taker with several good performances, notably against Thurlow at home and Wilbrahams away when he was almost unplayable in taking 4 for 7.  Seaman was the most economical and Simon Coston produced good variety with his spin.  Ryan Carey, Adam Coles, James Henderson, Tom Fenner, Jack Franklin, John Underwood, Freddie Steele and Tom Linstead all contributed two wicket performances on at least one occasion.  In general line bowled was rarely good enough, and there were a ridiculous number of wides at times.  This reflected lack of application in net practice, as well as the age old tendency to try and bowl too fast.
Ryan Carey captained the side vociferously, and the team showed good support for each other especially in encouraging younger players making an occasional appearance.
