After much consideration it was decided to field a team in the Premier League. The position of 4th out of 5 was probably about expected but it was disappointing to lose both matches to Histon. The best performance was a victory against Sawston in which a magnificent opening stand by Colt of the Year Sam Allen (57) and Michael Franklin (57 not out) laid the foundation. We were a little unlucky to lose the first match against St.Giles but won the return by default. We were also unfortunate to lose in the cup: having been 140 for 2 against Fordham with overs left, the rain came, and in the rematch we batted a lot less well and our score of just over a hundred was just overhauled. The pick of the bowlers was Nick Seaman who with Rob Jervis kept a tight grip on the opening overs, but the middle order change bowling was not economical enough. Simon Coston was a fine all rounder and there were occasional good moments from Jack Franklin and Adam Coles. R Henderson

Report on the Milton CC Under 15 match v. Granta (League) 11.07.05 Milton 61 for 8 (20 overs) Granta 62 for 2 (15.3 overs) Granta won by 8 wickets Milton made a respectable showing against a team which only lost three wickets in their first five matches of the season and seem certain to be premier champions. A steady opening stand by Sam Allen and Simon Coston was ended when Sam was brilliantly caught at mid off one-handed, which was the first of several such chances, made to look ridiculously easy by a fine fielding side. Noone really got going against a very tight attack, although Robbie Welton put in some good shots. In reply the Granta opener took 10 off Nick Seaman’s first three balls, before being comprehensively bowled off Nick’s fourth. Rob Jervis also bowled a lively opening spell and showed his best economy of the season, and the change bowling was also very tidy. Simon Coston was desperately unlucky not to pick up a wicket, and Robbie Welton held a superb caught and bowled. The result was never in doubt, but Milton made the visitors work hard. Report on the Milton CC Under 15 match v. Sawston (League) 27.06.05 Milton 146 for 1 (20 overs) Sawston 109 for 6 (20 overs) Milton won by 37 runs Milton gained a well deserved first win of the season to widespread relief, in a vastly improved performance. A magnificent opening stand by Sam Allen (57) and Michael Franklin (57 not out) laid the foundation. After playing a few careful overs against reasonably tight bowling, Sam Allen signalled his inentions by using his feet to advance against the slower bowling in the middle order. With some well run singles too the run rate steadily improved. Michael Frankin hit some good leg side boundaries and Nick seaman added 14 not out to take the run rate to over 7 an over. In reply Sawston stayed in the hunt at just behind the reached 59 for 0 wicket in the 10th over before Jack Franklin (3 for 12) dismissed both openers in the space of three balls. He claimed a third in his next over as a result of a stunning catch by captain Nick Seaman. The run rate fell away and Sam Allen chipped in with two for thirteen, while there was the customary economy from Seaman, and a good last wicket maiden over from Rob Jervis. A fine result against the second team in the table. Robert Henderson

Report on the Milton CC Under 15 match v. Sawston (League) 25.5.05 Milton 92 all out Sawston 93 for 2 Sawston won by 8 wickets Another story of a promising start to the innings, which was not built upon. Nick Seaman (14) and Sam Allen (20) shared an excellent opening stand of 43, before Nick was run out attempting an ambitious second run. After that only Simon Coston (10) reached double figures and the middle order succumbed to steady bowling, well supported in the field. Sawston, despite having only nine players, always looked to have the game in hand, despite the usual tight spells from Rob Gervis (0 for 19) and especially Nick Seaman (1 for 6 in 4 overs). When the second wicket fell at 40 Milton had a slight glimmer but the next two batsmen played confidently and were rarely in trouble. Robert Henderson

Report on the Milton CC Under 15 match v. Granta away (League) 6.6.05 Milton 82 for 6 (20 overs) Granta 83 for 0 (10.3 overs) Granta won by 10 wickets Milton won the toss and batted. Against a well balanced and varied attack, Milton always found it difficult to score freely and the run rate was less than four an over until the very end of the innings, not helped by some poor running between the wickets. Sam Allen did very well to score an excellent 25 and Adam Coles, who hit the first boundary, added 13. Later there was a useful stand by Rob Gervis and Simon Coston (20 not out) of 28. Granta also fielded tidily. The Granta openers soon signalled their intentions with two boundaries in the first over. Despite some quite decent bowling from Milton, the runs continued apace as the batsmen ran sharp singles and hit extravagant shots, giving only the odd difficult chance. Milton spurned these and did not get behind the ball often enough either, resulting in a straightforward and rapid with almost half the overs to spare. Robert Henderson
Report on the Milton CC Under 15 match v. Fordham (Cup Ist Round) 9.5.05
Milton 146 for 2 off 18 overs (Match abandoned)
A frustrating evening for all concerned. The early overs from Fordham were quite tidy, but after that and the early loss of captain Sam Allen (smartly caught and bowled) Nick Seaman (60) and Adam Coles, with his first ever fifty, cut loose in an exciting century partnership. Seaman was then very well caught and Jack Franklin then came in a to play a few good shots before the rain came.
Milton sportingly declared in the hope of getting a result on the evening, but the rain ad set in and the match now needs to be replayed. The provisional date is Wed. May 18th.
