First Team Match Reports

The first team competed in CCA Junior League Division 1N and finished 6th out of 10 teams (W7, L8, T1). The 1st and 2nd teams combined to play in the Junior Cup where we were knocked out in round 1. After a poor first month, the team rallied well and had a winning record for the remainder of the season. The most pleasing aspect of the season was the emergence of young players who have made their way up through the ranks from colts cricket. Eight U18 players played at least one match in the 1st team this year. We must ensure that we can find the right level for these emerging players; a potential problem is them bypassing the 2nd team. I feel that some regular 2nd team players must be more flexible to selection in other teams if this is to happen - there were several instances where 2nd team players were dictating team selection for the rest of the club which is unacceptable and must be prevented next year. In summary, the 1st team had an average season but the club now has more strength in depth and we should be seeking promotion to the senior league next year.

Match abandonned - rain
Milton were in a really strong position to win the game when heavy rain intervened and forced the game to be abandonned. Milton had made a decent score batting first, with the notable performance coming from young Sam Allen on his first team debut. He made an impressive and patient 80-odd which bodes extremely well for next season.

Sat 27th August 2005 Fordham II

Fordham II 232-3 beat Milton 149 all out by 83 runs
Phil Bone 45
Milton were well beaten as Fordham exploited Milton's bowler shortage to pile on the runs. After an early run out only young debutant Simon Coston and all rounder Ben Sanders managed to pick up a wicket each as numerous catches went to ground.
Opener Phil Bone was the only batsman to offer any serious resistance to Fordham's gentle paced but accurate attack. But as wickets fell and the run rate decreased, when Phil was out for 45 it had already become a case of trying to gain maximum batting points rather than go for the win. Unfortunately Milton came up one run short of even that small consolation for this poor all round performance.

Sat 13th August 2005 Fen Ditton

Milton 89-4 beat Fen Ditton 85 all out by 6 wickets
Mark Barton 8-23
Mark Barton took advantage of an abysmal wicket, wet conditions and poor batting to record incredible figures of 8-23 at Fen Ditton. Upon seeing the awful wicket and with rain imminent Jez correctly chose to bowl after winning the toss. Richard Thorpe and Simon Lee picked up a wicket each in a tight opening spell before Mark came on to steal the show.
Rain started to fall soon after the start but play continued for 20 overs before it became heavy enough to stop play and an early tea was taken. After the resumption Mark began taking wickets regularly as he put the ball on the spot and the Fen Ditton batsmen obligingly dollied several catches to fielders. When the last wicket fell Mark celebrated his career best figures.
Openers Martin and Sandeep were out cheaply before Gerhard came on and made batting on a very tricky wicket look easy with a couple of big sixes before being bowled for 26. When Chris de Vaal was the fourth man out with 35 runs still required Fen Ditton sensed may be in with a chance, but Jez and Jack batted sensibly to see Milton through to the win with no further dramas. The win was completed in under 20 overs and just in time before the heavy rain set in and the game would have had to be abandonned.

Sat 23rd July 2005 Littleport

Milton 215-5 beat Littleport 211-8 by 5 wickets
Gerhard van Schalkwyk 140 not out
A stunning knock of 140 not out by Gerhard won the game for Milton virtually singlehandedly after Littleport posted a challenging 211 on a tricky wicket. More later...

Despite 2 wins on the trot the league table shows we are still stuck in 6th spot, mainly due to Girton\'s shock victory over undefeated Doddington this weekend.

Sat 16th July 2005 Granta IV

Milton 181 all out (39.5 ov) beat Granta IV 134-8 by 47 runs
Sandeep Mohanraj 31, Martin Charlesworth 38, Peter Stoehr 37, Jon Dann 4-32, Mark Barton 3-29
Despite failing to fully capitalise on a great batting surface Milton had more than enough to defeat a Granta IV team who were much weaker than when they defeated Milton earlier in the season.
After winning to toss the only option was to bat on a flat wicket and a hot day. Milton got an excellent start as Sandeep and Martin looked in great touch as they cruised to 84 without loss in 15 overs and a 100 opening partnership beckoned. But Sandeep skied one to midwicket and was caught at the second attempt for 31. Martin chopped onto his stumps 2 balls later and when Jez was bowled for a duck Milton were wobbling at 85-3.
Peter and Gerhard steadied the ship somewhat but Gerhard was uncharacteristically struggling to get the ball away and sportingly walked when he got a fine edge to the keeper for 15. Peter held the innings together before he was bowled for 37 in the 32nd over with the score 146-6. But due to wickets falling the late innings accelleration never really came and when Dan was run out attempting a suicidal 3rd run the innings was over with a ball left.
If Milton had wondered whether 181 would be enough it soon became clear that it would as Granta quickly fell behind the required rate. This was due to fine opening spells from Jay Dann and Dan Coston, who was unlucky not to pick up a wicket as he bowled his full 10 overs for just 20 runs. Jay was to pick up 4 in total over 2 spells for 32 runs. Mark also put in an improved performance and collected 3 wickets while Ryan and Gerhard also took 1 each. At the half way stage Granta were just 51-3 and despite increasing the rate after drinks, it was just a question on what the margin of victory for Milton would be.
Milton team: Sandeep Mohanraj, Martin Charlesworth, Peter Stoehr, Jez Major, Gerhard van Schalkwyk, Ryan Carey, Jack Nayar, Dave Clark, Mark Barton, Dan Coston, Jon Dann

Sat 9th July 2005 Girton

Milton 160-7 beat Girton 156-7 by 4 runs
Jez Major 49, Chris DeVaal 50 not out, Gerhard van Schalkwyk 4-41.
Milton made a par score of 160 batting first in an inning dominated by 49 from Jez and 50 not out from Chris DeVaal at number 7. After 30 overs Girton were exactly half way at 80-3 and an easy Milton victory looked on the cards. But a late acceleration had Milton sweating as they started the last over requiring 10 to win. Fortunately Chris was able to restrict them to just 5 and Milton held on. Gerhard was the pick of the bowlers with 4-41 from his 10 overs.
Milton team: Peter Stoehr, Andy Peck, Ryan Carey, Jez Major, Steve McHugh, Jack Nayar, Chris DeVaal, Jon Dann, Gerhard van Schalkwyk, Mark Barton, Dan Coston

Sat 2nd July 2005 Littleport

Littleport 132-5 (35 ov) beat Milton 129 all out (37 ov) by 5 wickets
Martin Charlesworth 37, Jez Major 31
This was a deeply frustrating defeat for Milton against a Littleport team who looked very beatable on the day. A below par batting effort simply gave the bowlers too much to do.
After losing Peter early Martin made a stuttering 37 and Jez managed 31 but no other batsman reached double figures until a late surge from Conrad (28 not out) pushed the total almost to respectability. With Dan unable to bat due to a cracked rib five batsmen made ducks, so inevitably the total was low.
Milton\'s bowling and fielding was slighly better than the batting but nowhere near good enough to prevent Littleport overhauling the total comfortably. Steve McHugh and Mark Barton took a couple of wickets each but in truth Littleport were always just about in control and mature play by 2 youngsters at the end saw them safely home with 5 overs to spare.
Milton team: Peter Stoehr, Martin Charlesworth, Steve McHugh, Jez Major, Ian Jackson, Jack Nayar, Ben Sanders, Conrad van Reuck, Simon Lee, Mark Barton, Dan Coston

Sat 25th June 2005 Doddington

Doddington 165-2 (25.5 ov) beat Milton 161 (39.5ov) by 8 wickets
Jez Major 53
In cool conditions and on a damp wicket, tight bowling for the Doddington openers saw Milton collapse to 51-5 in 15 overs. A recovery from Jez Major (53), Jack Nayar (20) and some clean hitting from Simon Lee (23) restored some order as Milton posted 161. On a bowler-friendly pitch this should have given us a chance - it was just a case of bowling in the right places.
Unfortunately our bowling was poor and the strong Doddington top-order pulled the short stuff to the boundary time after time. Despite two early wickets, M Bamford (57 not out) and Brahmbhatt (passing 1000 runs for the season with 69 not out) put on 121 in 15 overs to see Doddington home with ease.

Sat 18th June 2005 Fen Ditton

Milton 230-6 beat Fen Ditton 139-5 by 91 runs
Peter Stoehr 36, Steve McHugh 46, Chris de Vall 38, Jez Major 37 not out; Mark Barton 4-48
This game had it all: fine batting and bowling (well from Milton anyway), an ex-club captain returning to action, an ambulance and a good splattering of blood.
After losing both openers inside the first ten overs, a fluent 80 partnership between Peter Stoehr (36) and Steve "one-eye" McHugh (46) set a firm foundation. Some solid middle-order batting from Chris de Vaal (38) and Jez Major (37*) plus a flurry of boundarys from Jack and Conrad saw Milton take 86 from the final ten overs and post a highly respectable 230-6. Despite star bowler Jeremy Jones breaking his ankle during the first ball of his spell, Fen Ditton were never in the hunt and seemed content to pick up bonus points.
Tight bowling from Chris (1-15 from 7) and Dan Coston (0-24 off 10) was backed up with wickets from Mark Barton (4-48) as the Ditton innings fizzled out. Not to be outdone by Jeremy, Sandeep also ended up in hospital with 7 stitches in his hand after dropping a catch on the boundary. There\'s a lesson there somewhere...

Thu 16th June 2005

The latest league table can be seen here - our first win on Saturday has pulled us up to 4th from bottom, thanks to us having earned more bonus points than the 3 teams below us who also have 1 win each. It looks like Doddington and Burwell will be the teams to beat in this division this year. On Saturday we play Fen Ditton who are just one place above us.

Sat 11th June 2005 Wilburton

Milton vs Wilburton
A summary of the match from someone who played: We won on Saturday (just). It was a bad-tempered game. We bowled very well (122-9 in 40) although at one point they were 92-9. Rapid start for us followed by a batting collapse. They started to get very bad tempered. Chris de Vaal chipped in useful runs at the end when we were about 100-8 with Mark blocking at the other end. Then Jacko gives Chris out lbw with us 1 run behind! In strides Dan. Mark squeezes the next ball to fine leg for a quick single. Dan on strike. Tensions high. First ball: swing. Inside edge. Single to fine leg. Milton win!

Sat 28th May 2005 Granta IV

Granta IV 256; Milton 197 all out; Granta win by 59 runs
Rob Jervis 2-59, Martin Charlesworth 42, Gerhard van Shalkwyk 44, Jack Nayar 46 not out
Granta opener B. Dormer was in fine form and punished Milton's toothless attack on a very windy day at the Sycamores. Dormer raced to his century when the team score was only 123 and when he was finally out, caught on the boundary by Graeme off Jack, he had made 120 of the 148 on the board. Milton managed to take a further 3 wickets, with youngster Rob Jervis picking up his first couple of first team wickets, but barely managed to slow the run rate as Granta hit 16 off the final over from Jez and reached an impressive 256-4. Jack was the only one of the seven bowlers used to return respectable figures of 1-36 in 10 overs.
Milton's reply started strongly as they hit 56 off the first 6 overs. Martin cashed in on ropey bowling from one end while Ben absorbed the pressure from the quick at the other to smash a quick 42 in 25 balls before getting a dodgy LBW decision. Meanwhile Ben was still to get off the mark and did manage a single before being bowled soon after.
Sandeep got a start but was out to ex-Milton bowler Steve Bartlett for 15, then Gerhard and Peter briefly gave hope as they began to build a partnership which reached 38 before Peter edged behind and Gerhard (44) received another contested LBW from Trigger. Milton then stumbled to 151-7 as Jez and Graeme went cheaply before all-rounder Jack added a good 46 not out, but was unfortunately not able to complete his 50 as he ran out of partners as Milton were finally dismissed for 197.
Milton team: M Charlesworth, B Sanders, S Mohanraj, G van Shalkwyck, P Stoehr, J Major, G Newton, J Nayar, R Jervis, M Barton, D Coston.

Sat 14th May 2005 Girton

Milton 89 all out; Girton 89 all out - match tied
Andy Peck 25; Jeremy Jones 4-21, Conrad van Reuck 3-26, Dan Coston 3-28
Milton produced a fantastic bowling effort to tie this game that seemed lost after some inept batting by both sides.
Stand-in skipper Sandeep elected to bat first after winning the toss. Martin started well with 3 boundaries but mistimed a pull and was caught. Sandeep was then soon back in the pavillion for 1 and Peter was out for 15. Then the middle order collapsed with ducks from Ben, Jack and Jeremy. Fortunately Andy Peck survived giving the simplest of dolly catches back to the bowler early in his innings and went on to make 25 vital runs but the innings was over soon after drinks for a measly 89.
Fortunately the bowlers were able to start well and with wickets falling regularly Milton were always in with a shout. Jeremy Jones continued his good form from last week and new boy Conrad bowled tightly from the other end. Dan came on and took 3 critical wickets including one the batsman decided to leave alone which nipped back enough to clip the stumps. But a spirited 9th wicket partnership seemed to have won the game for Girton as they levelled the scores with 2 wickets in hand. But Sandeep then made a great call and brought Jeremy back on from the other end and as the tension mounted he was able to take the 9th wicket. Then on his first ball the number 11 was hit on the glove but there was no run, and on the next ball Jeremy was able to bowl a quick straight one which was good enough to finish the innings and make Milton by far the happier of the two teams as the match was tied.
Milton team: M Charlesworth, P Stoehr, S Mohanraj, R Carey, B Sanders, A Peck, J Nayar, J Jones, C van Reuck, M Barton, D Coston.

Sat 7th May 2005 Fordham

Milton 150-8; Fordham 154-3.
Martin Charlesworth 28, Peter Stoehr 41, Andy Peck 31 not out
Milton paid for not making enough runs when batting first with opening day defeat against Fordham.
The season seemed to start well as Phil dispatched the first ball for 4, unfortunately he was out next over without adding any more runs. Martin and Peter then added 39 for the 2nd wicket either side of a rain break before Martin was caught behind for 28. Skipper Jez was bowled for just 2 but youngster Ryan Carey made a promising 10. Meanwhile after a slow start Peter went on to make 41, but Milton looked like making a very low total before some good hitting from Jack (24) and Andy Peck (31 not out), in his comeback game, boosted the score to 150.
Milton failed to get the important early breakthrough as Fordham raced to 52 before the first wicket fell when the skipper held onto a rocket for an exceptional one handed catch to give Mark the first wicket of the season. Jeremy Jones was the pick of the bowlers and bowled with good pace and direction, but only picked up 1 wicket of the Fordham number 3. Meanwhile young opener R Theobold went on to complete his 50 before Jack bowled him for 59 by which time the game was effectively over and Fordham completed a comfortable run chase with over 12 overs in hand.
Milton team: P Bone, M Charlesworth, P Stoehr, J Major, R Carey, A Peck, C Easley, J Nayar, J Jones, M Barton, D Coston.
