Second Team Match Reports

In summary the seconds struggled. The best performance was probably the last game which kept us up. The team lost a couple of key players this year. Next season, the club should hope to recruit a few more quality club players into first team.

Sat 15th July 2006 Fenstanton

Milton II vs Fenstanton (at Fenstanton)
Milton II 142 all out from 39.3 overs (P. Bone 41, M. Piaggesi 9.3-3-34-3, R. Mitchell 6-0-23-3)
Fenstanton 143 for 5 from 30.2 overs (M. Piaggesi 40, J.Jones 10-4-35-2, H. Nayar 8-2-11-1)
Fenstanton win by 5 wickets
Fenstanton easy to a Milton total despite the Milton’s tail’s gritty performance.
Jon, standing in for Bob, lost another important toss and were put into bat on a good looking wicket on a hot day. Jon and Phil opened solidly enough, putting on 32 for the first wicket before Jon was caught off the lively Piaggesi behind in the 14th over. Milton’s middle order didn’t really come off however. Hursh was caught, John Sanders, Sam Allen and Dave Sanderson all caught and bowled. The ball was beginning to cut up the pitch badly. When Richard Thorne fell, Milton were facing a score of under a hundred for the second week running. However, some good batting by Simon Coston, Barry Crick, Jeremy Jones (in his first game back) and Ian Coston saw Milton to a respectful 142 all out in the last over.
After tea, Mike Piaggesi came out determined to blow away the Milton attack. He hit a very quick 40, including dispatching Dave for 25 in one over before getting trapped by Hursh LBW. Some excellent bowling by Hursh and Jeremy Jones brought the game within Milton’s reach. However, D. Staines and J. Reynolds played with steady heads and saw Fenstanton home with 5 wickets (and plenty of overs) to spare.

Sat 8th July 2006 Coton

Sat 8th July 2006
Coton vs Milton II
Milton II 75 all out from 33.4 overs (J. Sanders 29, S. Swabey 6.4-1-27-5, C. Cooke 10-2-24-3, R. Chandler 10-4-8-2)
Coton 76 for 4 from 18.2 overs (C. Cooke 41, R.Newton 3-1-7-3)
Coton win by 6 wickets
Coton comprehensively beat a strong looking Milton side on a sticky wicket.
Milton lost an important toss and were put into bat on a wicket which looked like it might give the batsmen a few concerns. Familiar faces, medium pacer C. Cooke and spinner R. Chandler opened the bowling for Coton and Chandler quickly picked up the wicket of Phil Bone, caught behind. Graeme came in next and flew off the mark with two cracking boundaries, including a six over mid on. However, he smashed a full toss to straight to a fielder soon afterwards. After Bob was out, unluckily playing on, Milton were in trouble at 28 for 3. The other opening batmen, Jon Amphlett was caught out, soon afterwards, and it was left up to Phil Allen and Jon Sanders to build a useful partnership of 45. Jon was batting well, smashing two sixes before being bowled by Swabey for 29. After that, it was a Swabey cleaned up the rest of a disappointing Milton batting line-up. Milton were all out for 75.
A total of 75 is never really enough to defend, and despite a lot of bowling changes by Bob, only really himself and Hursh Nayar came off. Hursh captured the wicket of C.Cooke, and when Bob picked up 3 quick wickets, at least some nervousness must have entered the Coton changing room. But D. Hale helped smash the winning runs and both teams were in the pub before 6pm.

Sat 24th June 2006 Fen Ditton

Sat 24th June 2006
Milton II vs Fen Ditton
Fen Ditton 168 for 6 from 40 overs (Hayward 59, Wilson 32, S. Coston 10-1-33-4)
Milton 172 for 4 from 40.0 overs (J. Amphlett 60, I. Jackson 24, Rabjohns 10-1-40-2, P. Sadler 10-1-23-1)
Milton II win by 6 wickets
Milton come through against Fen Ditton after a tense, last ball thriller.
Milton won the toss and decided to field on a patchy, but drying pitch. David Sanderson struck almost immediately getting Rabjohns caught at square leg in his second over. Fen Ditton however, came back well and Wilson and Hayward put on 87 for the next wicket in only 13 overs. Wilson fell to the spin of Simon Coston just before drinks. Simon Coston was bowling well, and he also captured the wickets of Hayward (caught Ian Jackson), Clarke and Costello. Fen Ditton played the remainder of the overs steadily, without great incident, reaching 168 for 6 off their 40 overs. Fen Ditton were probably slightly disappointed with their total, however they were helped by a lacklustre fielding performance by Milton.
Jon Amphlett and Phil Bone have enjoyed some good partnerships lately and this game was no exception. Jon and Phil put on 57 for the first wicket and looked pretty solid before Phil was bowled playing an expansive shot to P. Saddler. Jon was joined at the crease by Ian Jackson and this pair took the score to 82 for 1 at 20 overs. P. Sadler was the pick of the Fen Ditton bowlers, completing his 10 overs for just 23 runs. Jon and Ian continued strongly after the break, taking the score to 106 before Jon was caught in the covers. Ian Jackson was joined by Sam Allen. Both looked comfortable but were bowled by some excellent bowling by Rabjohns. Milton needed 22 off 5 overs, but with two new batsmen at the crease the pressure was on. Bob Newton and Hursh Nayar took the score to 163 off 39 overs, leaving 6 required off the last over. A scrambled single, two byes, a dropped catch and a missed run out left Milton requiring just 1 off the last ball. Costello pitched the ball short and Hursh lent back and cross batted the ball for four. Milton were relieved to get their win, Fen Ditton distraught at missing their late chances to snatch a result.

Sat 17th June 2006 Somersham

Somersham vs Milton II
Somersham 254 for 4 from 40 overs (I. Boon 110, J. Turner 74, D. Sanderson 10-1-64-2, T. DeFreston 10-1-38-1)
Milton 191 for 9 from 40 overs (J. Amphlett 103, S. Attmore 21 not out, P. Coleman 10-2-30-3, S. Cornwall 3-1-17-2)
Somersham win by 63 runs
Somersham nock a huge score and hold off a strong Milton batting performance
Bob lost the toss and Somersham decided to bat. They got off to a slow start, but then openers Boon and Turner started to get going. They successfully saw off the openers (Tom and Dave) and set about Ciaran and Simon. Somersham were 87 without loss at 20 overs and Milton were struggling in the heat. The next 10 overs saw an extraordinary acceleration, Somersham racing to 184 without loss from 30 overs. Bob finally got a breakthough, Turner holed out to Ian Coston at long on. When Boon was caught by Tom, the rest of the batting was slow in comparison, but still the damage was done. Somersham finally getting a huge 254 for 4 off their 40 overs.
Milton again lost quick wickets in reply. Phil and Graeme both going cheaply. Fraser looked both solid and aggressive and his quick nock of 17 gave Milton some hope. Bob and Jon put on another 40 partnership and Milton were 82 for 3 at 19 overs. Bob was then bowled and Ciaran was unlucky to get a shooter and got given out LBW. Dave and Simon went cheaply and it was up to Steve Attmore to build a 74 partnership with Jon Amphlett. Jon and Steve successfully saw Milton past 150 and Jon brought up his century with two on-drives. Milton though were never really up with the run rate and they were eventually 191 for 9 when the overs ran out.

Sat 10th June 2006 March III

March III vs Milton II
March III 156 all out from 37.1 overs (D. Furnell 53, C. Conlon 10-2-44-4, B. Newton 8.1-2-26-3, C. O’Kane 6-0-23-2)
Milton 157 for 7 from 31.1 overs (C. Conlon 39 not out, G. Lawrence 6-0-30-2)
Milton II win by 3 wickets
Milton get back to winning ways at a scorching hot March
March batted first and got of to an absolute flyer getting 71 for 2 off 10 overs. D. Furnell was March’s main protagonist, confidently getting up to his fifty. Things were rough back under control by Ed Conlon and Dave Sanderson. The good work was carried on by Ciaran and Bob Newton. At drinks, March had reached a solid 109 for 2. However, March lost the key wicket of Furnell (LBW to Bob) and they never reallt got going again. The middle order somewhat faded away, and March limped to 156 all out with 3 overs left to bowl.
Milton’s batting still hasn’t got going this season and when the top four went cheaply, jitters were going though the changing room. However, Bob, Ian, Phil Allen, all chipped in with runs and Ed Conlon and Dave Sanderson took the game away from March. A 61 partnership between Ed and Dave meant that Milton won by 3 wickets with plenty of overs to spare.

Sat 3rd June 2006 Sutton I

Milton II vs Sutton I
Sutton I 193 for 7 from 40.0 overs (M. Vincent 105, R. Braybrooke 39, J. Nayar 10-1-19-3, T. deFreston 10-1-50-2)
Milton 89 all out from 33.5 overs (J. Amphlett 22, G. Cambell 6-2-9-3)
Sutton I win by 104 runs
Milton’s batting crumbles away chasing a large target at home
After many weeks of rainy weather, clear skies greeted the cricketers turning up to the sycamores. Sutton won the toss and chose to bat first. The Vincent brothers got off to a flyer with M. Vincent driving several balls from opening bowlers Tom de Freston and Rob Jervis straight over their heads. However, Rob bowled A. Vincent with an excellent Yorker and it was left up to R. Braybrook to support M. Vincent up to 20 overs. At drinks, Sutton were 86 for 1; Jack and Simon Coston finally getting the run rate under control. Soon afterwards, Jack caught and bowled R. Braybrook and soon took 2 more wickets. However, Milton couldn’t remove Vincent and he went on to get 105 before Simon Coston eventually bowled him. Tom got two late wickets to restrict Sutton to under 200, but the damage was largely done. Sutton had 193 for 7 off their 40 overs; a good score on a pitch that looked good but produced a lot of ‘shooters’.
Milton’s reply got off to a shaky start with Ben going LBW in the 4th over. However, Graeme and Jon looked comfortable enough and they got the score to 51 off 17 overs before Graeme was unluckily bowled by a ball keeping low. Ian Jackson joined Jon and at drinks Milton were 56 for 2. The rapidly raising run rate put some extra pressure on the Milton batsmen and when Jon got bowled shortly after drinks, Ian soon followed. With some good bowling from G. Cambell and J. Nuttall, the rest of the middle order fell away somewhat, with Pete Welton the only one to look comfortable for a while. Milton collapsed to 89 all out, with an incredible 7 batsmen getting bowled.
It was then off to the White Horse for some fish finger sandwiches and to discuss next week’s trek up to March.

Sat 20th May 2006 Soham I

Milton II vs Soham I
Soham 179 for 9 from 40.0 overs (D. Thomas 44, T. Brigland 37, D. Lunn 34, J. Nayar 10-0-28-5, D. Sanderson 10-4-18-2)
Milton 45 all out from 21.5 overs (C. Branch 7-2-9-5)
Soham win by 134 runs
Milton get blowed away at a stormy Fenstanton
On yet another stormy, rainy Saturday, Milton took to the field after winning the toss. Dave Sanderson and Rob Jervis bowled very well and restricted Soham to 28 for 2 off 11 overs. After drinks, Jack came on and kept one end tight and took a number of good wickets. However, finding support for Jack was difficult. Countless balls were swept to the boundary and Soham eventually got to 179 for 9 off their 40 overs. The feeling was that they got 30 more runs that they should have.
The opening batsmen for Milton got a reasonable enough start, reaching 21 before Phil got bowled by a slower ball from Branch. Unbelievably for Milton, the same seaming, slower ball from Branch accounted for Jon Amphlett, Ian Jackson, John Sanders and James Henderson shortly afterwards. Bob got caught behind, Jack was unlucky to get one that rose sharply and caught behind. When Mike Jervis got run out shortly afterwards the game had well and truly gone. Milton were eventually all out for 45, there lowest score for a very long time and hopefully a long time to come.

Sat 13th May 2006 Fenstanton

Fenstanton vs Milton II
Fenstanton 109 all out from 35.0 overs (M. Piaggesi 30, J. Nayar 8-1-20-4, R. Newton 6-2-17-3)
Milton 111 for 7 from 27.1 overs (R. Thorne 53 not out, M. Piaggesi 10-0-41-3, Taylor 10-2-16-2)
Milton win by 3 wickts
Milton show some resolve to win their first game of the season at Fenstanton.
The day began well at Fenstanton, with Bob winning the toss and putting the home team into bat. The weather was cold, overcast with a chance of showers for later. Wrapped in any clothing they could get hold of, Milton took to the field and were soon on the back foot due to the aggressive batting of opener Piaggesi. Fenstanton raced to 42 off 8 overs, before Richard Thorne struck. The ball after being hit to the boundary, Richard got his man, caught comfortably in the gully by Jack. This slowed Fenstanton’s run rate greatly and they only managed another 18 runs off the next 9 overs. At one end, Dave Sanderson was finding his line and length, barely conceding a run. Dave was joined by Tom deFreston, who soon set about Fenstanton, trapping Yakub LBW. Fenstanton were 64 for 2 at drinks, by which time Dave had bowled an incredible 6 maidens in a row. After drinks, Fenstanton really lost their way. Bob brought on Jack Nayar and himself and both bowlers kept things pretty tight. Pete Welton took a couple of sharp chances behind the stumps and a couple of batsmen played the ball onto their stumps. Fenstanton had limped to 109 when they lost their 9th and final wicket.
Milton hardly ever make a run chance dull, and when Phil (in such good form the previous week) hit his second ball straight at a grateful looking Yakub at cover, memories of previous failed chases came flooding back. Ben Sanders and Graeme steadied the ship for a few overs, before Ben was caught behind, Graeme was bowled and Bob caught and bowled without troubling the scores; Milton were in real trouble at 39 for 5 off 6 overs when Ciaran also followed. Richard Thorne joined Jon Amphlett at the crease to see off the openers who bowled their 10 overs each straight out. They did just that and Milton had recovered well at 61 for 5 at drinks. Jon and Richard (looking increasingly confident) took the score to 76 before Jon fell to Tattersal. Richard was joined by Dave Sanderson then Peter Welton before Richard hit the winning boundary and achieved his 50 in the same shot.

Sat 6th May 2006 Coton

Milton II vs Coton
Milton II 137 all out from 39.5 overs (P. Bone 48, D. Sanderson 25, C. Cooke 10-5-12-5, R. Chandler 3.5-0-6-2)
Coton 139 for 5 from 27.3 overs (C. Cooke 82 not out, T. deFreston 6-0-27-3)
Coton win by 5 wickts
The 2006 season got of to a wet start and the opener against Coton saw well Milton beaten by the promoted side.
On an overcast day, with rain forecast for later, Milton lost the toss and were put into bat. Openers Mike Jervis and Phil Bone looked circumspect against some good away swing bowling from J. Curley and C. Cooke. Cooke found his line and length quickly and in his third over dismissed Mike Jervis and Ian Jackson with balls that moved off the pitch. The following over saw Graeme Newton LBW to Curley and Milton were in desperate trouble (already!) at 12 for 3 after just 6 overs. Bob and Phil steadied the ship momentarily before Bob was bowled by Sparman, who had come on to replace Cooke. Jon Amphlett and Phil put on 30 together to take the innings to drinks. Milton were 59 for 4 after 20 overs. However Cooke, coming on for his second spell, soon accounted for Jon and James Henderson, both bowled. A very low score looked likely shortly afterwards when Cooke also bowled Ciaran OKane. Blushes were saved by Dave Sanderson who joined Phil at the crease and put on 52 for the next wicket. Dave was unlucky to get bowled by a full toss, and eventually Phil fell to Coton’s captain, R. Chandler. Tom deFreston (playing in his first game) and Simon Coston saw the last few overs out, before Tom finally fell to Chandler. Milton were all out for 137. Remarkably, 9 wickets were bowled, and one LBW.
The rain started falling just before the end of Milton’s innings and continued over tea. Coton started their innings well, but were pegged back when Simon Coston caught a sharp chance off Dave Sanderson’s bowling. Bob Newton was clearly struggling to get any grip in the wet, so bowlers were restricted to those wearing spikes. Coton’s number 3, Ballard and opener Cooke put on a solid 56 for the second wicet, effectively taking the game away from Milton. Coton reached 81 for 1 after 15 overs. Bob brought on Simon Coston and Tom de-Freston and Tom soon picket up his first wicket for the club; Ballard steepling one to Jon Amphlett in the covers. Tom then got Hale LBW and A. East (a sharp catch by Phil Bone) shortly afterwards and Coton were looking a little uncomfortable at 104 for 4. But the key wicket of Cooke alluded Milton and Coton were never under any real pressure. Despite Simon Coston and Phil Bone combining to get R. Allison out, Coton reached Milton’s total with over 12 overs and 5 wickets to spare. The rain then really set in and the majority traipsed off to the White Horse to discuss the day’s cricket.
