First Team Match Reports

In 2006, Milton CC 1st XI competed in CCA Junior League Div 1 N and the CCA Junior Cup. In the league we finished 6th out of 10 teams with 7 wins, 6 losses and 5 games cancelled due to rain. We exited the cup in round 1 to Longstowe. Despite a mid-table finish, we had a slim chance of finishing 2nd going into the final week and won three matches by over 100 runs this year. We had a winning record against the two teams that were promoted to the Senior league. Team spirit was excellent this year and we saw continuing improvement amongst our younger players. Although we have a team capable of winning promotion, we need to improve on our consistency, something that should come with experience. Individual awards this year were awarded to Jay Dann (Best Bowler), Jez Major (Best Batsman), Jon Scott (Player of the Year), Ryan Carey (Young Player of the Year) and Ched Conlon (Best Fielder).

Sat 8th July 2006 Fordham II

Saturday 8th July 2006
Milton 184 beat Fordham II 75 by 109 runs
N. Seaman 54, J. Scott 45, N. Seaman 4-9, J. Dann 3-22
Scotty and Nick Seaman were the main scorers in Milton\'s innings of 184 which was a much better score than seemed likely when the 5th wicket fell with only 73 on the board. Scotty once again gave Milton a good start with a quick 45 but with 4 of the top 6 failing to reach double figures, Martin & Nick had to solidify things when it was 73-5. Martin ground out a steady 19 but Nick Seaman was getting into his stride as they shared 42. Nick\'s 50 was soon reached but then he was unluckily bowled off his pads for 54, and with good support from Mark (22 not out) Milton posted a competitive 184 despite not using the last 2 overs.
Milton\'s bowled wasted no time in getting into Fordham\'s batsmen with Jay picking up Forham\'s skipper caught behind in the 2nd over. Jay went on to take 3 wickets and Ryan 1-12 as Fordham crumbled against Milton\'s pacey young attack. Change bowlers Ched and Nick kept up the pressure as Nick took 2 in his first over and also caused a rarely seen run out as he deflected a driven ball onto the stumps to run out the non-striker! The 9th wicket partnership put up a little resistance but the innings was soon wrapped up for 75 and a comportable win which puts Milton up to 4 in the table.

Sat 1st July 2006 Granta IV

Saturday 1 July 2006
Milton I 163-3 beat Granta IV 160-9 by 7 wickets
J. Dann 10-2-19-3, R. Carey 9-0-49-2, S. Mohanraj 42 not out, J. Scott 41, P. Stoehr 31 not out
Mark (standing in for Jez as captain) lost the toss and was put into field by his opposite number. The weather was scorching hot, the wicket dusty and both team sheets were affected by the 4pm England versus Portugal kick off. Granta got off to a bad start losing there opener G. Coteman, caught playing an extravagant shot off the bowling of J. Dann. Granta’s number 3, Henville soon followed. A. Mawby came to the crease and enjoyed a good partnership with opener J. Scott until Mawby was brilliantly run out by Ian Jackson. By this time Ed Conlon and M. Barton were bowling well and the run rate dropped to put additional pressure on the remaining Grant batsmen. F. Clamp’s time at the crease was also short, and at 20 overs, Granta were 73-5. The next 10 overs passed without much incident, Jack was a bit unlucky not to pick up a wicket as a number of chances fell into empty spaces in the field. B. Jordan was batting well for Granta and he scored 46 before falling to the Milton attack. The last 3 overs were played out well by T. Cuthill and A. Mamood as Granta reached 160 for 9 off their 40 overs.
Milton’s response began well as Scotty carted a young bowling attack to all corners of the ground. He was supported by Jon Amphlett and the opening pair put on 57 in 9 overs before Jon Scott was caught at deep square leg. This brought a confident Ian Jackson to the crease and the batsmen put on another 16 runs before Jon Amphlett was adjudged caught behind. Ian was unluckily caught bat-pad and Granta probably though they had an outside chance when Milton had reached 94 for 3, but some solid batting from Sandeep and Peter saw Milton home comfortably with 13 overs to spare (even with a break for the England / Portugal penalties). The winning runs were hit by Sandeep, pulling a huge six onto the railway track.

Saturday 24th June 2006 Newmarket

Sat 24th June 2006

Newmarket 156-9 beat Milton 132 by 24 runs
R. Carey 3-25, S. McHugh 3-23
Milton failed to chase a modest total by Newmarket as all the batsmen struggled against a good bowling attack and a very difficult wicket.
Newmarket\'s innings was based around a 56 by opener Rix in almost 2 hours. Other opener Muir made 35 but only 2 others reached double figures as after struggling early on the bowlers began picking up wickets. Ryan and Steve McHugh took 3 each and the spinners Mark Barton (1-26) and Jack Nayar (2-28) bowled a very tight 20 overs in tandem for just 54 runs.
Milton\'s top order failed to get to grips with the Newmarket attack as wickets began falling early. Martin and Steve were caught out by popping deliveries and it was not until Jack came in that Newmarket were put under some pressure. But after Jack was out the innings subsided away to 132 all out.

Sat 17th June 2006 Willingham

Milton 171 beat Willingham 165-9 by 6 runs
Jez Major 35, Jack Nayar 7-34
Milton won a tight encounter against a Willingham side sporting 8 South Africans. Milton got off to a good start and were 100-2 off 20 overs but collapsed a bit when JezMajor was out for 35 and it tooks some good batting from Mark Barton and Sandeep Mohanraj to get them to 171 all out with 4 overs unused.
Willingham had a steady start but put on a good 2nd wkt that was looking threatening (70-1 after 20) then collapsed and needed 30 off the last 4 overs. But Milton clung on to win by 6 runs with 9 wickets down. The star bowler was Jack Nayar who took 7 wickets in his return to the first team.

Sat 10th June 2006 Witcham

Milton 233-5 beat Witcham 91 all out by 142 runs
Martin Charlesworth 80 not out, Jez Major 56, Sandeep Mohanraj 34, Scotty 31, Ryan Carey 6-19
On a hot day at the Sycamores Milton\'s batsmen came good and racked up a daunting total which Witcham never looked like threatening.
After Peter Stoehr fell early, Scotty and Jez Major gave Milton a good quick start before Scotty got a shooter and was out for 31.
Then Martin Charlesworth & Jez had a good stand, with Jez leading the way with some typical pull shots as he raced to 56 before getting bowled through the gate by Witcham\'s left arm spinner who was getting significant turn on the dry wicket. Sam Allen perished in similar fashion next ball, but then Sandeep came in and Milton began to rebuild with both Martin and Sandeep finding the boundary regularly as Witcham\'s bowlers and fielder began to become dispirited in the heat.
Sandeep perished with a good catch on the boundary for 34 but Martin pushed on with his 50 coming up with a six into the trees at the Tesco end. Dave Clark came in and batted intelligently as Milton piled on the runs in the final overs with lots of singles and twos to reach 233-5.
Witcham\'s innings never got going after opening bowlers Ryan Carey and Jay Dann bowled with pace and aggression and ripped out the top 4 for just 20. Witcham began to fight back with a decend stand for the 5th wicket but this was ended by a superb catch at midwicket by Dave Clark off a ball which was certainly going for four. After this Witcham collapsed and the only question was whether Ryan could get his fivefer, which he did by efficiantly mopping up Witcham\'s young tail-enders.

Sat 3rd June 2006 Little Downham

Little Downham 71 beat Milton 62 by 9 runs
Jay Dann 6-12
On a dreadfully long outfield and soft spongey wicket both teams found runs very hard to come by and in fact only 6 boundaries were hit in the whole match. Milton dismissed Lt Downham cheaply for 71 with Jay Dann picking up 6 but in truth the wicket just as responsible.
After a memorable tea which saw Scotty win £3,600 on the Derby, Milton should have been able to make light work of the small total. But after losing Phil Bone & Sam Allen very early, Scotty (15) and Martin (13) were to only top order bats to reach double figures. After subsiding to 45-9 the game seemed to be gone until Jay Dann and Ryan Carey (11 not out) battled bravely for many overs and very, very slowly accumulated runs until under 10 were required. But unfortunatly they could not quite see it home and Milton fell to a very disappointing defeat.
