The 2011 season got off to a bad start when I lost the toss and Babraham asked us to field first. The nice red cherry nearly got a wicket with the first ball of the day as Steve Dye had a fairly adjacent LBW turned down, this didn’t matter too much as he took his first and only wicket of the day a few balls later, claiming Babraham opener Freeman LBW for 4. James Drummond was soon in on the act as he bowled number 3 Davis for 3. James fired in two yorkers and followed up with a decent length ball which hit half way up middle stump.
Although Milton’s attack didn’t bowl badly, the two batsmen at the crease managed to score boundaries at regular intervals. Steve’s final over went for 13 runs and he was replaced by Kiran Sakhamuri. Bilal Younus replaced James who had bowled an impressive first spell.
Kiran and Bilal both bowled fairly well and Kiran was rewarded by picking up Babraham’s Jennings, bowled by a “high yorker” for 17. Bilal should have picked up a wicket but was let down by some shoddy keeping (that would be me). After Kiran’s opening spell, he was replaced by Milton veteran Bob Newton. Bobby, as ever, was soon in on the act, his second over being a double wicket maiden including opened Liles for 37, both batsmen struggled with his accuracy and late movement.
The first over after drinks was bowled by Pradeep, who started with a wicket maiden, his delight at claiming the wicket of Babraham’s number 5 could be heard by the first team out in Doddington! Bob changed ends and continued to bowl well and soon picked up his third wicket. Pradeep, meanwhile, had finished a 3 over burst with the impressive figures of 3.2.1.3 the single being a fairy harsh wide call. James Drummond was brought back into the attack and picked up his 2nd wicket, bowling last man Bicknell for a duck.
Babraham had lost 8 wickets for 9 runs, and finished on 93 all out.
After a cracking tea provided by Julie Coston, Phil and Ian were sent out to knock off the required runs. Ian started well as he cut/slapped his fifth ball for four. Phil was soon into his stride driving the ball nicely. Ian was the first wicket to fall, unluckily dragging a wide half volley onto his stumps. Kiran soon followed as he flicked the ball to rather than over midwicket. Ally Crawford came in at four and together with Phil built a good partnership as they took the score past fifty, both rotating the strike well and putting the bad balls away. Phil played some trademark straight drives and Ally hit the ball nicely through the offside. Phil was out for 33 top edging a full toss for a simple caught and bowled. In strode father to be Jez Major who after a few singles, and typically exaggerated forward defences, tucked into slow bowler Lockwood. Jez hit a couple of fours and a monster six in consecutive balls to bring Milton within a couple of runs of victory. The game was won when Ally played a lovely cover drive for four giving Milton a comprehensive 7 wicket victory. Ally finished 25 not out with Jez making 23 not out.
A good performance from all involved was celebrated with an early start in the pub.
Once again we got off to the worst possible start as I lost my third toss on the trot, we were soon inserted into the field on a hot but breezy day. A strong Milton team took to the field hoping to make up for a disappointing loss in our last game against Foxton 2nds.
Jimmy D and Tom De F opened the bowling and were soon into their stride, both bowling tightlines. James bowled particularly well, his first 5 overs going for only 5 runs. Tom also bowledwell but had a couple of loose deliveries punished by openers Benson and Lang. Hursh Nayar, fresh from his stint in the West Midlands, replaced James and was rewarded instantly removing Lang (14) caught behind. Tom’s six overs went for 28 runs and he replaced by Bilal at the Tesco’s end.
Hursh picked up his second wicket, Benson for 28 caught by Jimmy D. He then had Siddharth caught at mid-wicket by Smithy for 17. At drinks Sawston were 3 down, with captain Matthews still at the crease. Bilal’s first over after drinks went for 12, including a six which struck the roof of the pavilion. Hursh continued to bowl well, restricting the batsmen with accurate lines and a hint of turn, his fourth and final wicket being Ankers for a duck – plump LBW. A great spell of bowling saw Hurshy picking up figures of 4/38.
Bob, who replaced Bilal, was also picking up wickets at a rate of one an over; including the dangerous Matthews for 33, a great catch by Jimmy at cow corner. Sawston continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, with Jimmy picking up two including bowling Lowrie for 25 and Boatman for 4, the ball just clipping leg stump. Bob finished with figures of 4/17 and James 2/16. An excellent all round display with the ball saw Sawston all out for 142. Special mention to Ally who played despite feeling unwell and made some crucial diving stops when out on boundary duty.
After a good tea, Phil and Bob were sent out to open the batting. Bob was soon on his way back, playing on for 2 to Boatman. Phil hit a couple of nice shots before he followed Bob back into the shed, having being caught for 12.
Graeme and Dave then set about reducing the total. Dave blocked and Graeme scored freely, he took 16 off of one over and then pulled Matthews for four to bring up his second 50 of the season. In a rare bought of aggression Dave hit Sawston off spinner Platt for two fours in one over, pulling one and sweeping the other.
Opening bowler Boatman was brought back into the attack, he bowled Graeme a slow full toss which Gra guided to cover for a simple catch. A game winning innings of 65 came to an end.
Smithy entered the fray and together with Dave knocked the remaining runs off relatively quickly, which is saying something for the two men in question. Dave ended 21 not out and Smithy 12 not out. The game ended somewhat disappointingly as Boatman conceded 5 wides, but who cares as Milton 2nds won by a margin of 7 wickets with 13 overs to spare.
