Sat 1st July 2006 Granta IV

Saturday 1 July 2006
Milton I 163-3 beat Granta IV 160-9 by 7 wickets
J. Dann 10-2-19-3, R. Carey 9-0-49-2, S. Mohanraj 42 not out, J. Scott 41, P. Stoehr 31 not out
Mark (standing in for Jez as captain) lost the toss and was put into field by his opposite number. The weather was scorching hot, the wicket dusty and both team sheets were affected by the 4pm England versus Portugal kick off. Granta got off to a bad start losing there opener G. Coteman, caught playing an extravagant shot off the bowling of J. Dann. Granta’s number 3, Henville soon followed. A. Mawby came to the crease and enjoyed a good partnership with opener J. Scott until Mawby was brilliantly run out by Ian Jackson. By this time Ed Conlon and M. Barton were bowling well and the run rate dropped to put additional pressure on the remaining Grant batsmen. F. Clamp’s time at the crease was also short, and at 20 overs, Granta were 73-5. The next 10 overs passed without much incident, Jack was a bit unlucky not to pick up a wicket as a number of chances fell into empty spaces in the field. B. Jordan was batting well for Granta and he scored 46 before falling to the Milton attack. The last 3 overs were played out well by T. Cuthill and A. Mamood as Granta reached 160 for 9 off their 40 overs.
Milton’s response began well as Scotty carted a young bowling attack to all corners of the ground. He was supported by Jon Amphlett and the opening pair put on 57 in 9 overs before Jon Scott was caught at deep square leg. This brought a confident Ian Jackson to the crease and the batsmen put on another 16 runs before Jon Amphlett was adjudged caught behind. Ian was unluckily caught bat-pad and Granta probably though they had an outside chance when Milton had reached 94 for 3, but some solid batting from Sandeep and Peter saw Milton home comfortably with 13 overs to spare (even with a break for the England / Portugal penalties). The winning runs were hit by Sandeep, pulling a huge six onto the railway track.
